Chupa Chups S.A is a Spanish lollipop company. The company is recognized as the leader in the manufacture and distribution of confectionery products. The company was founded in Asturias, Spain in 1957 by Eric Bernat Fontlladosa. After several months of confectionery research and development, the first lollipop hit the market in 1958. The name Chupa Chups comes from the Spanish verb chupar, meaning "to suck". The company distributes the brands including Chupa Chups, Cremosa Chupa Chups, and Smint Xylicare. The company has three production facilities in Spain: in San Esteve De Sesrovires, Villamayor, and in Zaragoza. Its registered headquarters is located in Cornella De Llobregat in Barcelona. The company also has production facilities in Toluca, Mexico, and in St. Petersburg, Russia. The company has business operations represented by its subsidiaries in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, UK, Russia, USA, and Mexico. The company also has offices in Japan, Korea, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Ukraine. Chupa Chups S.A. is the parent company of the Chupa Chups Group, which makes four billion lollipops a year in more than 40 flavors. The company was owned and ran by the Bernat family until 2006. In July 2006, the company was sold to the leading Italian confectioner Perfetti Van Melle.
